[RC] Trail riding in a group - amy

Hello All-
I have found myself with a bit of a problem and
thought asking for some advice might help me out. I
have purchased myself a rescue/auction horse.
Although he was not in bad shape really, just not too
much for training and needed some vet work. We are
doing fantastic, he is the most mellow and laid back
horse. However, I am having a bit of a problem with
him at the canter when we are within a group of
horses. Last weekend when he went off in the back of
the group I started him collected but when asking for
the stop or to slow down since I felt him get too
strong he stuck his head in the air and just refused.
Luckily when I told my friends to slow and walk they
did and we were fine. I know my new horse really
feeds off of other horses and so maybe he will never
be able to handle this situation? But here is my
thought to try? Maybe when my friends would like to
canter I could prepare myself by turning my horse away
and when they go start circling my horse if he will
not walk. Then as soon as he walks let him move
forward. If he refuses to round and listen go back to
circling. I think this is a good thing to try, does
anyone have any other suggestions? When do you
realize they just don't ride well in groups and maybe
give it up? Thanks! Amy
