Re: [RC] Multi-day rides in the East - Barbara McCrary

You are right, Kat; multi-day rides WERE originally designed to utilize
historical trails. When this was so, the experience was fascinating; to be
able to ride the exact same trail as the pioneers traveled was an experience
of traveling back in time and feeling what those people must have felt.
Only we had the luxuries of water when we needed it and a comfy place to
sleep at night. When it became obvious that our riders preferred to have
one base camp, not have to find a crew-driver, most multi-day rides
gradually, inconspicuously, phased into a base-camp, "daisy petal"
ride......five different rides out of the same starting place. No one even
noticed this was happening, and the riders were very happy because -
frankly - finding a driver who wants to spend a week driving and serving up
water on the trail is not easy. So the "historical trail" aspect has all
but disappeared. I don't think anyone really cares any more...... The
notable exception is the Pony Express ride that truly travels on the old XP
route. That did field a lot of entries. Bravo for that and to the ride
managers for pulling off such a wonderful feat.
My husband and I tried to revive Lavone Booth's old Applegate-Lassen Trail
ride, one of our favorites. It was point to point for 250 miles, on or very
near the original route. We could barely get five entries. We had to give
it up; we couldn't even cover costs, and those were fairly minimal.

Subject: [RC] Multi-day rides in the East

Truman mentioned that the reason he had no interest in the
mileage and pioneer awards was that these awards go to
people who do multi-day rides, and since there are so few in
the east, that such awards are totally out of reach, or more
accurately, driving distance.

I am curious:

Why ARE there so few multi-day rides in the east?

Is it because of lack of availabe trail?
Lack of interest on the part of the riders?
Because nobody thought of it?

Or because of the prior requirement (which no longer exists,
I think, but I wouldn't swear to it) that such rides needed
to be on "historical" trails, and all the historical trails
in the east have long since been paved over?
