RE: [RC] [AERC-Members] Updated AERC BoD Midyear meeting Agenda - Bob Morris

Another point of interest is who is sponsoring these
requests for grants proposed by the Vet Committee? Are the
proposals in a formal request for grant state and what is
being offered the AERC that will be of benefit? Are there
any matching funds or "in lieu" contributions? Or is the
AERC funding the total effort? Who will posses the results?
Will they be shared, published or squirreled away in
academia?

Sorry Board, but the membership deserves full disclosure!

Agenda

The references to lack of publication of the specifics (or
more reasonably
definition and publication of an overview which would inform
the membership
prior to commitment of funds), is only one of the problems
that the $s rich
AERC board should address.

There are funds for trails projects, funds for technical
purchases, and the
referenced funds for veterinary research grants which are on
the table. In
all cases, there has not been, to my knowledge, any
information made
available to the membership as to how one might make
application to
participate. There has been no call for proposals. There has
been, again to
my knowledge, no review of the proposals made available
(even to the board
members let alone the membership??).

It seems very much like cart before the horse (sorry -
equine mr. eiland)
to start giving out the $s before the organization has a way
to figure out
the value return and before equitable availability to all
(regions in the
case of trails) is resolved.

I'm sure there are reasonable and worthy projects throughout
the land, but
there is no way for people to make application. And there is
no way for the
organization to evaluate the value - that would be value to
the membership,
simuliar to the general "increase shareholder value", of any
of these projects.

Possibly it would behove the board to direct that the
infrastructure for
the granting process be put in place before any significant
funds are
allocated.

Addressing the specific line items is premature. How much
total spending
is being proposed?? is it >$100k? is it > $200k?

woe to the poor director that must make an informed decision
during an 8
hour session in a tent in the desert:)

The following grant proposals present a questionable

The following proposals are being presented to the BOD for
approval at this time. Each proposal will be voted on
separately.

1) Pen State/Dr. Durando. Ranked #1 and graded A. Good
value
and very possibly could identify horses that maybe should
not be involved in our sport. We recommend funding this one
NOW. Notice Meg Sleeper is part of the study.

2) Oklahoma/McKenzie. Ranked #2 and graded B+. fair to Good
value and certainly important in endurance. Could just
possibly be a precursor to our kidney failures? Top people
and also endurance people. We recommend funding this one as
well.

3) Kansas/Poole & Erickson. Ranked #3 and graded B. Not
sure
EIPH is a concern in endurance and too commercially
involved. I asked if the makers of the strip would be
interested in splitting and got a NO. We do not recommend
this one be funded.

4) VA/Kronfield. Ranked #4 and graded A-. You have the
original and a revised one I got today. This is ongoing
research and wants help. They are offering to give us
articles etc. if we send them money. We recommend partial
funding at this time ($5,000 to $10,000).

These grant proposals as stated presume full knowledge not
available to the membership. Since the grant funds are a
fairly considerable amount I believe that it is only fair
that the membership be made aware of the details associated
with these grants.

For instance, taking #1 above; exactly what is of good
value
and could possibly identify horses that should not be
involved in our sport? Are we looking to deny entrance to
endurance competition certain horses with particular
characteristics?

And the #2 above; just what is of good value and certainly
important in endurance? I have not experienced kidney
failure and have not heard of any one else having such
experience.

Exactly what is going on that the AERC Board is voting on
the expenditure of $45,000, the use of which has not been
identified to the membership. I feel this type of action is
contrary to the principles we look for from the AERC
Directors.
