[RC] problems with treeless saddles... - Lucy Chaplin Trumbull

The biggest problem they have is that some people
don't believe it is possible to ride in one and not
sore your horse's back... :))

Like any saddle, treeless saddles don't work for *all*
horses. But because there are less "solid" parts on
them, they stand a better chance than most of fitting.
However, for example, the solid pommel "fork" on the
Bob Marshall SportsSaddle doesn't work for all horses.

Because you don't have a tree, you need to make a
gullet for the spine, so it is imperative that you use
a good (read "expensive") pad, like a Skito or Toklat
Coolback with foam inserts (mind you, those are nice
to have, even with a treed saddle).

Treeless saddles don't work great for high-spined horses
("tent-shaped" ones) - you can't pad enough to protect
the spine on this shape of horse.

Treeless saddles aren't great for unbalanced riders or
riders who ride heavy - but this is also true of treed
saddles. It's maybe a bit worse for treeless ones, though,
because it can create pressure points.

Treeless saddles tend to have little/no twist, so tend
to be wide (esp. if your horse is wide) and that can
torque some riders hips/knees.

Despite all the above, many high-mileage riders are using
them very successfully. And once you've adjusted to riding
in one, it can be very hard to switch back to a treed
saddle. :)
