RE: [RC] Adios/Metabolic failures@ PAC - McGann, Barb

I'm not in any way advocating this (I'm likely to leave for home if I live
close), but way back in the 70's, there were many rides in Colorado and Utah
that had a Sunday morning "fit-to-continue" completion and BC judging.
Obviously, if your horse was treated during the night, you didn't complete.
The other interesting side effect was that people spent buckets of time taking
care of their horses - walking them every hour or so to make sure they didn't
"stiffen" up, icing legs to combat stocking up, etc.

One possible criteria is the one used by UMECRA, no medication etc. before
the horse leaves the ride site. I have argued against this rule at UMECRA
conventions because it raises the spector of sick horses being thrown into
trailers so that they would not have their completions removed. To defend
the rule, I have not seen this happen at UMECRA rides.

If there is a feeling that a significant number of horses develop metabolic
problems a few hours after completion, there could be another metabolic exam
scheduled at a particular time post ride. I would not be opposed to it
being the next morning. This might also force some people to stay in camp
longer, thus allowing more recovery before trailering.

PS. I am aware that some (a minority) horses live so close to particular
ride that it is better to take them home immediately...
