In the show ring, one need not be accomplsihed or masterful, one only need have the right LOOK and the right CLOTHES and even the right TRAINER.
 
Say what you will about the dressage enthusiasts but the schooling shows (not to mention the recognized shows) are all about riding light, riding right.
riders are judged on their ability to communicate to their horse and the horse's acceptance of the bit and aids, as well as the horse's suppleness and movement. An ill prepared horse or rider will not score well.
