[RC] Decline of the 100 Mile Ride - Carolyn Burgess

I am a member of ECTRA and got the most recent news letter. In it was showing a historical chronology of rides in the Northeast and distance. There had been a huge decline in the number of rides in the last 10 years.

I have never done a 100, nor a 50 at this point. My venue right now is LD/CTR, because of my life. Would I like to do a 50, yes, and I have a horse that I think will do fine in 50's. He is not a 100 mile horse. So that would mean getting another horse. It would also mean training and riding two horses. And the expense of a second horse and maintaining that second horse. Neither of which I can do now.

I know in my case there are several reasons why I won't be doing a 100 anytime soon: time and money. I ride for fun. One of the reasons that I will be doing 50's as soon as I can is that 25-35 mile LD/CTR rides are just too short. Just as I am really starting to have fun, the ride is over. Another 15-25 miles would be great. But I'm not sure that doing a 100 would be twice as much fun as a 50.
