Our daughter lost a month-old foal to a congenital heart defect; two mares
died of internal ruptures on our ranch. One had never been broke but was
five months in foal; the other was an endurance mare, but she was nowhere
near a ride (timewise) when she died.  She was standing in her paddock.  Not
eating.  Had cold nose and eartips.  Very suspicious.  Had a rupture and her
abdominal cavity filled with fecal fluid.  Not all deaths occur as a result
of over-riding.

That doesn't always work either, though. Had a beautiful morab filly

@2yrs, was going to be my future endurace horse. Came home one day and she
was on the ground in the neighbor's pasture. Flipped over the fence, broke
her neck. Also had a gelding that got 'possum fever and should not have
lived, but he did. And the mare that I just started competing this year, had
EPM 3 years ago. None of these horses were competing in anything when these
things happened. You never know.
