[RC] [Guest] Vet Drop Bags - Ridecamp Moderator

Karen nelson knelson@xxxxxxxxxx
I use a men's suit/travel bag that I found in the thrift store for $3.50. It is fairly tough nylon(?). Easy to replace if damaged, and has 2 or 3 handles for easy carrying.I put hay, shallow pan and bagged dry mash and supplements into that side. There is plenty of room for extra easy boots, etc. since I usually carry 2 easy boots on the saddle and one in my fanny pack, I don't ususlaly have them in the vet bag. I also put my lunch-Nestle's Sweet success or Slim Fast into this side. Cans- just pop the top- vitamins and minerals, easy to eat very quickly or in vet line. Tastes best cold, but tolerable anytime, many flavors.I also pack 3-6 bottles of water-12orl6z. for myself to refill my 2 bottles on saddle and 2 in fanny pack. 88 oz total.
In the small(shoe?)pocket on the other side, I carry a used shower curtain, all folded up, so I have something to put my saddle on when we have to pull them and have no clean area to do so. There is enough room for me to sit/lie down on it, also if need be. If I am leary of rain, I tie jacket on saddle, and carry rump rug for horse on rear of saddle with ties. As for splint boots, I carry them ALL THE TIME on the breast collar. Either half boots, or full size. They don't bother the horse, and I always have them if horse gets tired enough to interfere. I usually only use half boots. Back partition of large rider card bag-Griffins- has plenty of room for rider card and an extra zip lock, along with a couple of nylon boot laces and a spare snap. I carry my meds, chapstick and a small compass around my neck with cords. Compass won't get me from Liverpool to Long Beach with the Queen Mary, but will give me a general direction if it is cloudy and I can't figure it out. On Tevis, I premake a 3x5 card with distances between and accumulated for all the intersections. It helps me to stay focused, and when it seems like a LONG way to the next anything, the card helps me see the smaller portions and it goes faster. I code in colors where there is a hold/vet/water/etc. But that is only for Tevis.
