[RC] Disaster Tips Addendum - Lydia Cassilly

If you are evacuating and have to leave your horse behind--some folks just don't think a storm like this can find them--Please, once again, EVALUATE YOUR LOCATION.

The decision whether to leave your horse stalled or free in pasture is a tough one for some people. What looks like a sturdy structure may not be as strong as you think. In a category 4 or 5 storm, there's not going to be much left standing, anywhere. Even if you have hurricane clips on each and every truss (you do, don't you?). Consider turning your horses out with full I.D. on them. Even if your barn manages to stand, don't assume that you will be allowed into a disaster area anytime soon after the event! Don't assume that roads will be passable to get there.

Where do the power lines run in relation to your barn and pasture? During Andrew, many horses survived the storm by standing in ponds and ditches up to their eyeballs in water. Flying debris then could only hit their rumps and damage was along way from their vitals. Unfortunately, powerlines tend to be placed above roadside ditches. Animals that sought shelter in the water got electrocuted. If you have a powerline in or near your pasture, consider turning them loose elsewhere.

Hope this may help someone. L
