I think the problem is both that some horses turn up their nose at too much oil in the grain, and it can go rancid if exposed to too much heat, light or air! As it's said, it only takes a week to lose the weight, but may take 6months to gain it back. We got them to a new farm and closer to home. We tried all sorts of stuff to get weight back on them, Weight Builder by Farmam, Build Builder 4000, Triple Crown Complete with Rice Bran. That complete feed was like $13 a bag...ouch!! And my Quarab ended up turning his nose up too it. We gave up on that fancy gimmick weight gain stuff and went to pure corn or canola oil. I believe Dr. G talks about using oil on her website. We picked up those huge jugs of oil from Sam's club. Started with 1/2 cup and worked up to 2cups of oil a day. This was added to their standard feedmill 9% sweet feed and beet pulp mix/mush. It took a good 2-3 months of this and their weight really came around. We worked them back off the oil and now don't need any. We saved a lot of money and our 4 horses look great.
