[RC] Kimberwicke bit - Cowgirgoof

Hi, it's interesting that this thread came up right as I'm in process of
switching bits on my "young" horse. Although he works well in the arena in the
full cheek snaffle, on the trail he was requiring more control. I'm a firm
believer in John Lyons methods, but I also realize that what we do on trail
(going straight with little or no room for lateral work), calls for a levage
bit in many situations. A sage old horsewoman (who rode the first Florida 100
in 1951!), told me to try a short shanked Pelham with bit converters on him.
Voila, he loves the straight mouthpiece. He almost instantly became a
responsive dream to ride and quit yanking for weeds, pulling at the trot and he
was just generally more relaxed (and so was I because I knew I had control).
But alas, it really is too much bit for him, so I dug out my old uexter
kimberwicke, and he is fine in that. I believe they should make the kimberwicke
in a mullen mouth, but I cannot find one (except in certain Mylers, and not in
a 4 3/4).
Thanks for your great tips on this bit. I know alot of distance riders use
them, and it's no wonder why...Most of us know we should do more training at
home, but can't always have the time...
Becky
