Re: [RC] [Guest] Horse Death at Owhyee Ride - Jim Holland

Idle speculation on a horse death no serves no useful purpose and is
counter productive.

Dr. Jim Baldwin and the Veterinary Committee are doing an excellent job
investigating and reporting the circumstances surrounding a horse death
to the AERC BoD and the membership...IN DETAIL...along with ride
environment and what conditions/actions might have prevented it. If you
have not done so, please read the Committee Reports from the last AERC
BoD Meeting at:

http://66.253.93.220/Documents/BoardMinutes/MinutesCommitteeReports20030729.html

which includes an excellent Vet Committee Report by Dr. Baldwin on a
horse death.

READ it! Learn from it! It took a lot of effort from a lot of dedicated
people to make this available to you.

IMHO, AERC is now committed to ensuring that NO horse death occurs
without a thorough investigation and that the membership can review that
information and learn from it. To do it properly takes time...be
patient! The efforts put forth by Dr. Baldwin, Mike Maul, Mike
Tomlinson, John Parke...and others...and the support of the BoD and the
membership to make this happen are appreciated by this member.

In addition, the Horse Welfare Committee will provide additional studies
as a supplement to the Vet Committee Reports. The voices of those who
speak for the horse grow louder and more numerous.

It was a very sad time for all involved.

I'd caution that "We heard that someone overrode their horse and it had to
be put down...." is a very broad comment.

Could one of the ride managers fill us in on the horse death at Owhyee
over the weekend. We heard that someone overrode their horse and it had
to be put down on the second day.
