Re: [RC] [RC] Riding in the heat and humidity - Laurie Durgin

The humidity/temp index is always over 150 in the summer here. With Rascal , he doesn't sweat like the other horses do, they can have sweat on a hot day on thier flanks or more , and he is dry. He sweats under the pad mostly , on occasion he has gotten damp on his flanks, chest. But that was doing 1.5-2.5 hour rides.Half is in the woods, so that probably helps..I sponge him if he is sweatring at creeks, or with my water bottles.
It was cool this summer and he is off right now. I have been riding Honey lately at about 8:00 am. in our ring. It is shaded at that time .And even though the humidity has been in the 80%'s for sometime, the temp is onl,y in the 70's , low 80's. Afternoons, the Sun is a killer beating down, and though the humidity drops 10-15% the temp goes to 90's. Index is about the same. I perfer the morning. And there is less chance of 4 wheelers early. Plus I don't run out of daylight if I want to go further!
And I get ot come home , hose them and take a shower and stay inside till evening feeding!!! Laurie

Foxhunters are having a discussion about riding in the heat and humidity. Endurance riders have been taught not to ride when the sum of the heat and humidity is over 150. So, how do you folks in the Carolinas, GA, TX, and other hot and humid states condition during the summer?

Are there very many summer rides in these humid states?

These foxhunters are saying, "Well, guess that means I shouldn't be riding now but that would only leave me about 4 months in the whole year to ride!" I think that's a bunch of hooey. The humidity drops here in OK so I know it does everywhere else too.

So, fill me in. How do you condition in the hot&humid summer?
