All this talk of rearing horses reminded me of the time my sister's gelding 
reared with her.  Straight up and just hung in the air.  She was riding on 
a flat english saddle and started to slide right off.  Being a person 
utterly determined not to fail, she grabbed his ears and hung on with her 
feet going straight down his back!!  She wasn't thinking of teaching him 
not to rear -- just didn't want to "lose" by coming off, but that horse 
never reared again.  Guess he didn't want to risk his ears.
