Re: [RC] [RC] Rearing (slightly OT) - Laurie Durgin

That has been my experience with Rascal and Honey. She was a 'fear freak" for 2 years (4-6) Know who had her from a baby. Imprint trained and then in a pasture with minimal handling(a pet).No abuse ever.
I did groundwork for 2+(ahhh, had to learn how to ride and train :}. After Rascal and I learning together , him, aaahh, trying to be teacher of course. (and lots of books, especially John Lyons, and lessons we are finally getting somewhere!!. )
She really settled down this last year or so, and she 8 years old and maybe 30+ hours under saddle---well, she is sound!!! Now we have trust, confidence and a pretty good seat!!! She listens now, and only bolts itty bitty, then realises she is too dignified to do that any more (sure beats running thru the fence with the upside down saddle, freaking out when blanketing(ahhh, yes , itty bitty steps; still freaked.) Fighting the farrier(she stands now 85% of the time like she should).
Brains and training are finally overriding her emotions.. . . .
Had a friend who raised her two arabs and she said she didn't trust them till they were about 9-11 Flame disclaimer:.Her words, not mine.) Laurie,Rascal9recovering with stone bruise and epm, Honey who is now trotting under saddle!!!!, Scout- whose QH half overrides his Arab half ,when it comes to blankets.

I should have added that thought to my previous message.....between 4 and 6
are the "terrible twos" of the horse world. I have yet to ride an Arab that
had stabilized his behavior much before age 7. At 7 they start to look
hopeful, are better by 8, and are really settled by 9. Sounds late? Maybe,
but it has been consistently my experience.
