Re: [RC] Rearing (slightly OT) - Stephanie E Caldwell

Our horsehoer
at that time was an experienced western rider, and he mounted up, asked
the
horse to move out, the horse reared, and the man promptly boxed the horse
on
the head, right between the ears

I got talked into trying this with my rearing mare... She learned to rear
with her head down!

I'd love to hear some ideas for stopping it, as I've not found anything that
work. She usually rears when she's in pain, anything from girth galls to
rocks in shoes to pinching bits to ill fitting saddles. I've tried John
Lyons head down stuff, pulling her head around to my knee (she still tries
to rear, but falls instead), slapping her on the poll, tie downs (she can
rear even higher since she ahs something to balance against!), etc... and
nothing has stopped it. She doesn't rear often when she's not got something
bothering her, but any is too much for me!

Steph
