Interesting, we have done our share of "brush popping", and have never had

limb run under the breast collar. But, I guess anything could happen.....

Indeed.  And I don't chastize riders for using them, unless they are causing
a problem (such as the one Maria described with the girth galls--I've seen
that more than once as well, even when the breast collar appears to be
properly adjusted).  My objection was not to the use of the breast collar as
much as it was to the tone of the post suggesting that those who don't use
them are somehow flirting with disaster.  There is a time and a place for a
breast collar, but it is hardly necessary on a good-backed horse with a
properly fitting saddle.  And I found the implied condemnation of those who
have same and don't need them (and therefore don't use them) to be a tad
prickly.
