My husband and I do not use them no matter what. One time my husband did use a breast collar on a hilly ride, it pulled the saddle too forward and the mare ended up with girth galls. I was mad at myself because I knew they didn't need it. We are the few who will not use them on hilly rides but it also helps to be a balanced rider.
