Re: [RC] de-worming for tapeworms? - Magnumsmom

Does anyone here know anything about a new de-wormer that combines
ivermectin with another de-wormer that targets tapes?
Do we really need to be concerned about tapes in horses? Or is this just a
marketing strategy?

No, I don't think this is just marketing strategy.

Yes, you really do need to be worried about tapes
in this day and age. While strongyles used to be
the big colic issue, now that they can be eliminated
tapes have become identified as a threat. The
information I'm basing this reponse on is paraphrased
from both Equus and speaking with my vets.

Tapes were the one big "downfall" of Ivermectin that
has been proven. Ivermectin alone is not effective
against tapes.

There is some indication (my CA vet visiting foaling
farms) that foals wormed with just Ivermectin alone
can still harbor worms. This, however, supposedly has
not yet been "scientifically" proven.

I have been rotating in a double dose of Strongid (2
tubes given at the same time) into my worming schedule
once a year for years now. Equus at one time reported
that 2 tubes takes care of 100% of tapes in 95% of the
horses the report tested. 3 tubes is also well within
the overdose safety limits of Strongid (we're talking
noise floor here) and was reported as taking care of
100% of tapes in 100% of the horses. However, when I
asked my vet about this is just said 2 tubes is fine.
Of course I have an 800 pound Arabian and a 1100 pound
TB and not a 2000 pound draft horse.

As for the "new" stuff, personally I have a rotation that
works and while I think it's fine, I'll wait and see what
the reports back are. On this one though I suspect it'll
prove to be quite safe and effective.

By the way, I wondered why the name "Zimectrin" was sold
several months ago. I figured something was coming, but
I wasn't sure what. Ah hah! It's an ivermectin+ wormer
that also takes care of tape worms.
