sounds like the horse has spent a lot of time doing arena work.  a lot of horses get bored with it after a while.  as for the trail part of it, it takes lots of miles to work out the bugs, especially if the horse was mostly ridden in the arena.  they are not used to things out on the trail and it is a different environment.   i think he just needs a lot of riding, but could benefit from some training too.   excercises in the saddle,using one rein stops, some basic groundwork, getting control of the horse's head, fore quarters and hind quarters, etc.  it takes a firm hand and the know how to do this, so you might consider having someone do it for you.    ed
