[RC] re: 100 mile riders - Cindy Collins

I KNOW I'll hate myself later for getting into this discussion, but I just can't help myself.  For most of us "old timers" endurance is 100 mile rides, period, end of discussion.  That does not mean that we will not reach a point where 50 or even 25s will be all we can hope to ride.  It also doesn't mean that we "look down" on LD riders.  It just doesn't occur to me, and many pre-1980s riders, that anything other than a 100 miler is what the sport is really about.  It's a mind set.  All the other distances are a lead up to the ultimate goal of a 100 miler...and I mean a "real" endurance 100 miler like Tevis, BigHorn, Old Dominion, Swanton, Virginia City, etc.  Flatland, loop 100s are even looked at as a preface to the tough 100s you are hoping to finish.  I know that many people on this forum don't understand this feeling and belief system and it's why we struggle so hard to communicate w/each other cause it's like arguing religion.  We're t he people who started out on 100 milers and often took horses on a 100 for their first ride.  So, how can we relate to people beating to death whether or not they or their horses can do a 100 miler after they've ridden 50s for years?  It's like the mile in running and the Kentucky Derby in horse racing...it defines endurance riding.  It's like saying you want to kiss, but never have sex!  Now that I have your attention...I'll go clean up my tack from the BH 100 which I didn't finish this year due to a lost stirrup in the canyons (7 buckles so far) and dream about next year's 100 mile ride.  Cindy Collins
