There are a number of grades of borium (and similar products under different trade names).  Road riding on wagon trains I found that the finest grade worked fine without causing lameness.  The horses got good traction, but slipped enough to stay sound.
 
I have used snow pads and coarse borium on winter ice in WI with good results.  I did find that as soon as the ice went the borium had to go.  It caused to much traction, which caused overreach with loss of shoes.
