[RC] [Guest] Confirmation needs of an endurance horse - Ridecamp Guest

Becky spiritwood@xxxxxxxxx

DeEtte,

In looking for a potential endurance horse there are many factors to
figure in. The number one thing you want to look for is a horse you can
get along with. Don't take on a difficult personality as you may be riding
long distances by yourselves. You need to trust each other and get
along. Next you want a SOUND horse. Have your vet do a pre-
purchase exam with your intended use in mind and he/she can help
you decide on suitability or your potential horse.  Next  I would look at;
Good feet- good angles, strong, and (generally) bigger is better
Good mover- doesn't interfere, moves efficiently and no wasted action
Well balanced- Large or small, well balanced just works!
Deep heart girth- for increased lung capacity
NOT Heavily muscled- Heavy/thick muscles retain heat and can't cool
well, more prone to metabolic problems/overheating
Good length of neck-for balance up and down hills
And lastly, a sane and sensible brain- willing to go where (few) horses
have gone before.
Hope this helps, and good luck with your new endeavor! It is a
wonderful and addictive sport!
Becky
