Re: [RC] LD's - Heidi SmithI'm a newbie here so don't all be shocked <grin>, but what is an LD? A 25 mile race?? Hey, that's ok--it pays to remind us "oldbies" once in awhile that we use too much shorthand.... :-) LD = Limited Distance--and means rides less than 50 miles (yeah, someone will likely jump on me for not looking up the precise wording in the rules). Most LD rides are 25 or 30 miles. And they are SUPPOSED to be used as training rides with the racing element downplayed--but the fact that many still offer placings is indicative of the fact that getting through faster is rewarded in many cases. Unlike 50's and up ("endurance rides"), LD's DO have a requirement that your clock doesn't stop until the horse's pulse has reached the ride criterion, though--which does take some of the flat-out racing out of it. AERC does have a season and lifetime mileage program for LD miles, separate from endurance miles, so there IS reward for continuing to complete, instead of just hopping in for the occasional race. As I said in a previous post--many horses don't need LD to get into endurance, but many RIDERS do. And ain't it great that we have LD--just for that very reason! :-) Heidi =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
