[RC] [Guest] Head dropping-bit info re Mary O's problem - Ridecamp Guest

Ray O'Donohue rno2m@xxxxxxxxxxxx

When horses learn to run with their head between their ankles as a form of
resistance,it is terrifying and dangerous.I have been told that once they
learn to do this, they will of course never forget how to do it.I want to
reccomend the following bit to anyone who has had this problem. It is NOT a
severe bit unless all of the very progressive action is utilized, and this
bit has plenty of pre-signal along the way.The bit is from National Bridle
Shop, and is called the "Ported Bradoon Snaffle" #1189,page 108.This is a
very confusing name-for one thing, the mouthpiece is a 3-part tongue relief
design. The bit is a latest generation gag design, and requires short bridle
cheeks. It utilized no curb chain/strap.It is sweet iron, extemely mild in the
early portions of take-up,and is ideal for direct-rein directional cues with
pinkie and index finger if you use a one-piece rein and ride
one-handed.Every horse I have ever put it into has seemed to like it right
away.Chico the Rebel will canter with his head between his ankles in
response to any and all conventional shank&curb bits, loose rein or
otherwise. With this bit he doesn't.The other horses I have tried it on were
not head-droppers.It COULD maybe lead to head tossing in some
horses-maybe-but I haven't experienced this.I reccomend small snaps for the
rein-to-bit connection.
