[RC] building a base - lisa oberteuffer

as a total newbie, I have been following this discussion with interest
(and taking notes!)

got a few questions ...

in general, how much should the rider (and horse) be accustomed to
riding before trying an LD? should I ride 25 miles at home (in under 6
hours) to make sure we can both do it, or is it good enough if we have
done our LSD conditioning and can do, say 15 miles and end up fresh ...?
ie, is the ride the place to stretch yourself, or do you do like the
dressage riders who train at a higher level at home and show at a lower
level?

and then specifically, if we are still at the lots-of-walking stage, is
it OK to ride everyday (or try to)? I ride before work, so an hour is
the most I can do weekdays ...

I really like stagg newman's schedule for people with full-time jobs :)
but don't we need a little more baseline fitness for it to work? (the
most we've ridden is about 4 hours/12 miles. and we do not do this
regularly! --so far ...)

thanks in advance!
