Yes I do always stretch that area (and legs) before I ride. Good suggestion.
 
I did find out from the previous owner that they used a mohair string girth on him for years without any problems, so I'll have to try that one (as many of you suggested). It must of worked ok cause they were using a semi QH bar old western saddle that must of been extremely uncomfortable on the poor chubby fellow!!

Unless I missed someone else suggesting this, be sure after you have
tightened the girth, to lift the horses front leg way up and out in front of
him, to stretch out that skin that is bunched up under the girth. Some have
more "wrinkles" in that area, and will gall more easily. Getting the
wrinkles out form under the girth will eliminate many of the gall problems.
