RE: [RC] Saddle - best value & comfort? - Born Country

I'm a FW, but my husband is a MW (albeit on the light
side of MW). His mare seems to like his saddle, too.

Hi Sharon,

Even though I'm brand new to this sport, I have
ridden
in my sport saddle for several months now. I love
it
and so does my hard-to-fit horse. I use a skito
pad
under the saddle that distributes the weight
evenly
and had a channel down the spine for air-flow.
The
inserts come out of the pad so I can just toss the
pad
itself into the washer. The inserts get horse
hair
all over them, but I just use duct tape to get it
off.

When I first used this saddle, I noticed 2 things
right off the bat. I can feel the muscles of my
horse's back. If he tenses for any reason, I know
it.
 The second thing was that he moves much easier;
really strides out on the trot. I chose treeless
simply because my horse is so difficult to fit.
This
way, I don't worry about trees. Of course, this
is
just my humble opinion!

Hi,

I'm growing increasingly disgusted with the
saddle I
bought a year or so ago,
around the time I bought my horse. Being new to
distance riding, I thought
that just because a saddle had "endurance" in
the
name, it would be
comfortable. Even after having a saddle fitter
adjust it to my horse, we're
both still having problems. 'Nuff said about
old
history...

My horse is a 7yo 850# 14.2h Arab/Rocky Mountain
Horse, and he's gaited. He
takes a medium-wide tree, I'd guess.

Not only does the new saddle need to fit him
really
well (which of course is
obvious) and give him lots of shoulder room so
he
can really stride out, but *I
NEED* a really really REALLY comfortable seat
for my
bony butt. I also need
the stirrups to be back far enough so I can get
my
feet under my hips.

We're currently doing both CTR (up to 2-day
50's)
and Endurance (up to 50) but
we're doing it all slow - this is our hobby not
our
profession! I have a very
small budget... as in, will have to pay with
several
different credit cards.

I'd love to find something used because it would
be
less expensive, but I
suspect it would be like me buying shoes at Good
Will... it wouldn't "break in"
to his back like a new saddle would. (Am I
wrong?)

Does anyone have any thoughts for me in this
search?

What brands are a really good value when they're
new? What brands might fit OK
even though they're used?

Thanks,
-Sharon K. & Zephyr's Elegant Gift
