Re: [RC] Splint - Sullivan

What did he do BEFORE all this? What you are describing is more than what I
am doing with my 4 year old, 15.3 big boned Arab/paint filly. I am keeping
under 20 miles a week, and not riding on her back for more than an
hour....BUT, she had 4 years leading up to this being ponied and running
loose on the trails...so she is already pretty legged up and strong....

Subject: [RC] Splint

I have started my 4 year old on a beginning endurance carrier this
summer. He is going well and we do about 5-10 slow miles about 3 times
a week. We walk, slow trot and never canter. Last week I noticed that
he popped a splint. There was no warning that it was coming. No heat
and no off-ness at all. We use roads and hard packed dirt roads to ride
on along with the grassy right of way areas when we can. Am I being too
hard on his legs with the impact of the roads? We are still barefoot at
this point and I don't notice that he is interfering at all to have
caused this splint. It is a high, inside splint on the cannon bone.
Any ideas as a course of action or maybe some training changes? He has
good substance and bone for a four year old and we have really been
taking it easy so this just mystifies me.

Thank you.
