certainly depends on your mount.

Steph is bringing along a couple of 7 year olds - we're doing as many slow 50s (like 8-10 hour rides) as we can fit in this season. We will try to add at least one multi-day in that mix. Then middle of the pack with them next year with maybe a slow 100. And then, maybe, she'll do a few competitive 50s in the third year (when they are 10) with the main focus on moving them up in distance/speed. Competitive riding takes a good base. Years from what I've seen. The training miles/week in the first year aren't really that much of an issue after you've got them to the point of doing the slow distance.
