Re: [RC] [RC] pawing at the water trough - Laurie Durgin

Weeelllll, we had a mare who did that, so got a taller trough, she still managed to do it. So we put big rocks around it ,so she had to stretch to get a drink and couldn't get her feet in. But she only did is in the summer :] Lauie/

Help! I just got a couple of young mares (3 yo) and at least one of
them likes to paw in the water trough! The "trough" is a 40 gal oval
black rubber thing. None of my other horses have done this. One of
the problems besides having to refill several times a day is that the
flies are attracted to the mud created.

I'm thinking of building a platform to elevate the tub so they can
drink but have a hard time pawing in it. (She also paws her feed
bucket; I fixed that by hanging it higher.)

Any other ideas? Any warnings about how high to make it? Obviously,
I'll have to make it hard to tip over...

Thanks,
Rosalie
