[RC] Small horses and endurance - Lysane Cree

I have also come to appreciate the benefits of a
smaller horse when it comes to getting on and off on
the trail when you have been riding a long time and
are getting tired. They are that much closer to the
ground!

When I was just doing casual trail rides I used to
admire big horses and thought that I just had to have
a 16+ hand horse. Sure the taller horses can look
"impressive", but once I started doing longer
distances I found it wasn't so fun to struggle back
into the saddle onto a 16 hand or more horse. And I am
fairly tall at 5'7. I have ridden a couple of horses
lately that are 14.2 - 14.3 (I used to think that 14.3
was small). It is not small at all. They felt just as
big as any horse because they had spunk and energy. I
am starting to believe more and more that size is all
relative and has way more to do with the horse's
personality.
And from the experience of people on ridecamp it
doesn't sound like size is a disadvantage for
endurance.
