 Re: horse kicking a pasture-mate, one thing I have read here
to help with stall kicking is to tie an empty platic soda bottle
to the hind leg with a short length of soft rope: when they
kick, the bottle bounces off their legs and is annoying.  Don't
know if it would work in this situation but it might be worth a
try.  Separation is, of course, preferable.
