Our older dun mare used to paw the trough  only in the summer,till she was 
quite wet, she taught her colt to do the same thing. When he started it ,I 
got a deeper trough. Kept him out ,but not her. She also did it twice on 
long hot summer rides till she was soaked, when stopping to cross a creek.
   She never did it in the winter or when it was cool.
    I am also keeping two poinies and their foals, one mare paws in the 
trough, now her baby is doing it, but not the other mare or foal. (Horses
