[RC] Heart rate vs legs, starting out - A. Perez

"If I was just getting a horse started I
wouldn't be worried about heart rates. I'd be worried about
legs."

I can relate to this on a very personal level: many years ago I
decided to take up jogging. Getting past the 'out-of-breath'
phase seemed the hardest, and once I got past that I ran
daily.... until I wound up with a stress fracture: it was too
much to fast for my bones, even though my
cardio/vascular.respiratory system was fine.

The nice thing about heart rate is there is a nifty little
gizmo
(hrm) that gives you a nice, unabiguous number... but how to
tell if the legs are holding up? Other than swelling or
obvious
lameness, how to tell what's too much? Any guideleines for how
slowling to increase mileage or speed when starting training?
