>it does take quite a bit of force to break that snap, george lay down in a red ant bed once,(hadnt noticed it under some pine straw when i checked the area) jumped up and hit the end of the lead and snapped that plastic buckle.  he didnt run off though, just stood there trying to figure out what got him. so, in some cases, a break away is a good thing.   
 
I guess that's the sort of example that would cause me to say that it's NOT a good thing.  Horse was not in trouble, and it wouldn't have hurt him to stay tied--but had he not stuck around of his own volition, he could have gotten into harm's way.  Again, JMO.  :-)
