Re: [RC] Advice on Dealing with "Strange" Dogs - SABRINA KOHOUTEK

We get chased by barking dogs all the time.  The one thing that works for me it to turn my horse around so she is facing the dog and move towards the dog.  When they think they are being chased by a huge animal, they will usually turn around and go the other way.  It also helps the horse relax if she can see the barking dog head on.  Good luck.

Subject: [RC] Advice on Dealing with "Strange" Dogs

Hi list,

Does anyone have good tips for dealing with strange dogs that run up to you
while you are riding? We encountered a rather aggressive brute today who was
heel snapping and barking like a maniac. I tried the soothing "good dog"
routine but when that failed I resorted to telling him to "GO HOME". Luckily
Magnum is a pretty mellow fellow or I might have found myself walking home ;o)
Any tips on dealing with dogs that come after you?
