[RC] Herd bound - Beth Glace

Hi all,
Hoping the collective wisdom can help me here. My 9 y/o mare has
just been moved to a new barn where she is turned out, with another
mare, 24/7. She had been in a barn where she was out 12/7 with
another mare. Although she is not a confident horse on the trail,
and will try to tag right behind other horses, runners, dogs or
mountain bikers, she had never displayed herd-bound behaviour prior
to this around the barn. Nor had the mare she is turned out with.
Now she can not be put in the box stall for grooming without spinning
around, screaming, pawing, rearing and attempting to jump out. I
have not ridden her at the new location yet, but have done ground
work with her outside the pasture. She spins, rears, steps on me,
bolts, and the other mare races and screams the entire time we are
out of her sight. She is rank and potentially dangerous.

Any advice on how to begin countering this behavior? Should we begin
seperating them by leaving one horse in the box stall for a few hours
per day?

Thanks for any advice,

Beth
