[RC] Disunited canter - Kristene Smuts

Hi guys, it might sound like a strange "Subject" for this forum, but I'm asking
the question in relation to a fairly new gelding who is my backup to Ibn.

I got him last year August and just let him chill and Cindy rode him in one
30km ride in March - he had done a pretty fast 60 before, but I wanted to start
from scratch with him as he had some riding issues (the very reason I got him,
go figure!). He had been ridden at almost flat-out sprint most of the time a
saddle was on him and he thus has a few problems, 1. He travels with an
extremely elevated head, with the resulting incorrect neck muscling. 2. He
doesn't "like" trotting and would break into a canter at every opportunity. 3.
He canters disunited ALL the time, even when out in the field playing - it has
become a habit now.

So, the biggest problem is the disunited canter - the dislike for trotting and
the giraffe neck can be dealt with with diligent schooling, but my problem is
that I don't know how to break the habit of the canter. He has become so bad,
that I can't even put him in a circle to try and get him united again. I'm not
a dressage rider by any stretch of the imagination, but if dressage schooling
is going to do the trick, then I'll have to do it.

He's about 8 years old and very well put together, is sure footed, has good
balance and IMO can be a very good endurance horse.

Thanks!
Kristene
