Re: [RC] Fetlock Injury? - GoTory

Have to agree with Heidi.... my mare suffered a fall last October in which
she apparently caught a hind hoof between 2 immoveable objects... long
story...flexion test negative, no obvious lameness after the first couple of
days. Just swelling on both sides in the lower tendon area. Had her off work
for a few months after initial cold water hosing and bute, wrapping, etc....
ultrasound a couple of months later showed some residual fluid in the tendon
sheath and some scar tissue formation.
Puffiness on both sides just above the fetlock persisted, would soften with
exercise but be hard as a rock the next day. was encouraged to "just ride
her, it's cosmetic"....
Have had the feeling something wasnt right... still not lame, just a
difference in the rhythm of her gaits. Took her to an equine ultrasound
specialist about 10 days ago.
Findings- digital sheath has effusive/proliferative synovitis with adhesions
to the superficial digital flexor tendon and the medial collateral ligament
has chronic partly healed desmitis.(Am buying a good book on anatomy for
clarification...)
We are back on a medical treatment plan of low doses of bute, icing daily, no
turnout, 30 minutes of walking 5 x/wk, Adequan weekly for 4 weeks, egg bar
shoes.
She's scheduled for another ultrasound in a month. May need surgery to clean
out the scar tissue and release the annular ligament from constricting the
tendon.
Then would be looking at another 6 week medical treatment similar to the one
we're on now. Dont know if she'll be sound to do any distance in the future.
Vets and any with similar experience or advice PLEASE feel free to comment...
From my own experience- regret that i didnt follow my own instincts
sooner.... nikki
