Re: [RC] Random Trail Surface Observation - Heidi Smith

>The worst offense is considered to be ridinga horse when a trail is wet and muddy.  The horses' hooves create thousands of little coffer dams in which water pools and does not drain.  When the trail surface dries off, it is pockmarked with these craters and the bike people and the hiker people raise the dickens about how awful it is and that horses should be banned &etc.

Meanwhile, watch mountain bikes and motor bikes cut a groove right up the middle of the trail.  Then watch the trail erode away right down the "drainage" made by the groove.  Viola!  No more trail!  Those pock marks that "do not drain" are a GOOD thing--they keep the trail from draining away, too.
