YOU gals have given a lot of good advice on this subject.  I would like to add that with my horses I can use a Myler broken snaffle on the horse I ride, and have lots of control.  This bit does not have the nut cracker effect, and because of that spaced double joint, I can ask for a turn to one side or the other.  I have the reins coming into opposite sides of my fist, and so can easily give contact to which ever side of the horses mouth I want.  I personally like this very direct control.
