[RC] Bone spavin - Kristi Schaaf

Kathie -
My favorite horse in the whole world has bone spavin.
He was diagnosed at age 10 (he's 13 now), and it's
been quite a roller coaster ride. Sometimes he is so
sound I forget that he has bone spavin, and other
times he's miserable. He has (until this year) gotten
his hocks injected every spring. This spring, he seems
to be doing well without the injections, so my dream
(fantasy?) is that his hocks have fused. Here's the
big 'BUT' part....my vet says that fusion often takes
a lonnnnngg time (if it even happens at all), so the
chances are not high that his have actually fused.
AND, even if they have, it all depends which part of
the hock joint is affected, because some horses' hocks
fuse (confirmed by x-ray) but they're still routinely
lame (my vet has an eventing horse in this category).
So, I don't want to rain on your parade, and I could
be wrong wrong wrong, but I find it very iffy that a 7
yoa horse's hocks have fused, first of all. And even
if they HAVE, that's not a guarantee that he'll no
longer have problems with bone spavin. The fact that
he's been injected could be also be masking the fact
that he has active bone spavin (injection-caused
soundness can last from 1 month to 1 year, depending
on the horse). I'm sure not saying that the owner is
trying to lie to you, and I don't want to steer you
away from buying a horse that may be the perfect one
for your daughter, but I don't want her to have the
heartbreak I've had in dealing with a horse that is
sometimes sound, sometimes lame.
