Re: [RC] Vegies for horses? - Lynn Kinsky

Hello,

My daughter in law has an organic garden plot and we were wondering what vegies the horses could have. Her garden is over flowing with stuff, carrots, beets, chard, potatoes, etc. I know that they can't eat stuff that we can't eat ie) tomato leaves, but what about the vegie stuff? Are there vegies that the horses shouldn't be fed? And can I give them carrot and beet greens...

Thanks,

Nina

Potato foliage is just as toxic as tomato foliage (both nightshade family): but otherwise carrot, beets, rutabegas (tops and bottoms), turnips, chard, corn stalks, beans, peas. They will eat summer squash, and mine *relish* winter squash. Sweet potatos they can eat everything (it's not related to regular potatoes). They like sweet peppers, but all of the peppers are nightshade and the foliage should be avoided. ditto eggplant (http://plants.montara.com/ListPages/FamPages/Solana.html). My horses love watermelon.
