I tried every thing I could think of to prevent my horse on stall rest from fretting and further injuring himself. What worked for me was getting a young goat and putting it in the stall with the horse. The goat was so cute and fun, that I kept him, and his job now is as a companion to whoever needs company and quieting down. He is currently in with my pony who is on dry lot (to lose several hundred pounds!) The goat is named Clark and he only cost $40. Goats are easy to find as people who raise them to sell goat's milk, are only too happy to sell off the little boys. the suggestion to get a goat was made by the vet at K-State where the horse was treated. when they are neutered, goats don't smell, and the castration only cost $5. Horses like cats too, but mine wouldn't stay in the stall with the horse. and when the cat left, the horse fretted.
