[RC] RE:Stall Rest? part 2 - Jonni Jewell

Now how to help build him back up without risking colic/founder/NDR(not
doing right)? He has all the hay and water he can
eat and drink, and grain twice daily(Equine Senior/sweet feed mix). He also
gets 1/2 cup canola oil a day. Other suggestions? Otherwise the
vet(Jeannie Waldron) will yell at me next week when she sees him again. <<<

Cut out all the crap you are feeding him until his ankle heals. He will not
die from starvation on a hay only diet. No wonder he was a nut case. All
that grain and oil, and no way to burn it off except running laps in the
stall. If the vet yells at you, fine. It is the ankle you want to heal.
After the horse is back to work, you can slowly start adding the grain to
his ration again, but until then, cut out all the power food! Oh, you could
slowly change to adding a beet pulp (no molasses) to his diet for more
fiber, without all the other stuff that is in the grain.

Just my opinion........
Jonni
