RE: [RC] Stall Rest? - Snodgrass, Bonnie

Becky,
I went thru this with my mare river when she hurt a suspensery. She needed
to have a horse right beside her. Since she was boarded, at night all the
horses were in so she had a horse directly beside her and was calm. During
the day River went outside into 16x16 pen bedded in sawdust to prevent mud
and had a pony directly outside her pen who was kept within an electric
fence so it couldn't wander far from River. She also go Quietex in her feed
which actually helped for about 4 hours before it wore off. Perhaps with
your setup you couldbuild a small electric paddock to hold one horse just
outside of his stall with some room to graze and walk.

Subject: [RC] Stall Rest?

Hi ridecampers,
I am looking for any ideas to help a pretty fit endurance horse who has
been put on 2 weeks stall rest. He is pacing, fretting, head shaking,
calling to his friends in the field, and digging holes in his stall. He
has all the hay he can eat and a full water tub but is not drinking very
well even though he is going through a lot of hay. He eats very soupy
meals and drinks a bucket of his "tea" (warm water) after every meal, but
if he doesn't get out soon he will need psychiatric care. He is supposed
to be resting for an ankle injury but he is doing little pirouettes in the
stall and is very conversational. I am allowed to hand walk (read become a
human anchor) him to graze a bit but it is like lighting the fuse on a
rocket. any suggestions?
Becky
