Vinager in rinse water is good for shine(humans anyway) and gets out the soap. Most hair conditioners contain some form of mineral oil or lanolin. Rub some baby oil(mineral oil type product), in your hands then run them thru your horses hair. Hardness of your water could cause dullness too.

Hi Gabi,
I use plain old human hair conditioner. The leave in kind if I find it. When
I first got into horses, I was romanced into showing a young gelding who was
truly outstanding. I showed him until I figured out that each blue ribbon
was costing me an average of $600 considering trainers fees and boarding,
etc. Anyway, I remember that they could prep horses until they sparkled. One
of their secrets was that they slathered mayonnaise on the manes and left it
on for a couple of hours before rinsing it out. I have never tried it so
can't tell you from first hand experience.
