There was a little blurb in Equus several months ago stating that the same
horse could be 1 hand taller when fit than when unfit.

I read somewhere that a horse's torso is "suspended", and not rigidly
attached.  Therefore exercise and strengthening of the suspension muscles
can increase their height as measured at the withers.  I don't remember
where I read it though.  I subscribe to a number of magazines and read
anything horsey in sight.

Maybe that would explain why an out of shape 7 year old seemed to grow
after
a year of work.
